The African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA), in collaboration with the Uganda Cooperative Savings and Credit Union (UCSCU), successfully hosted a regional SACCO training workshop aimed at enhancing governance, compliance, and financial sustainability among cooperative leaders in East Africa.
Participants from Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, and other neighboring countries attended the multi-day workshop, reflecting ACCOSCA’s commitment to fostering regional integration and cooperative growth through shared learning and innovation.
The workshop covered crucial topics including:
- Financial risk management in SACCO operations,
- Data protection and digital system adoption,
- Cooperative leadership and governance ethics,
- Regional regulatory frameworks and harmonization strategies.
Representatives from SCCULT (Tanzania), UCSCU (Uganda), and other national apex bodies emphasized the need for SACCOs to embrace innovation, transparency, and sound governance to remain relevant in a dynamic financial landscape.
During the event, participants also discussed regional challenges such as cybersecurity threats, regulatory compliance gaps, and the importance of member education in cooperative sustainability.
A highlight of the workshop was the presentation of digital cooperative platforms such as the CSS (Cooperative System Solution) being adopted in Tanzania, which inspired discussions on possible replication in Uganda and other East African countries.
The training concluded with strong calls for continuous regional collaboration, regular capacity-building, and youth inclusion in cooperative leadership structures.
